Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) Welding
What is TIG welding?
TIG welding is a type of welding, which is the process of joining metal by melting. TIG stands for Tungsten Inert Gas, and it uses a tungsten electrode to melt the metal, enabling it to be joined together. It was first used in the 1940s and was instantly successful for its ability to join magnesium and aluminium, as required by the Californian aerospace industry at that time.
What are the benefits of TIG welding?
The core benefit of TIG welding lies in its versatility, specifically the fact that it can join different metals together. This was revolutionary in its time. TIG welding allows the welder to weld complex shapes, such as “S” bends or curves, which can be impossible to weld using other forms of welding. Due to the process of TIG welding, it is possible to weld in any position, such as vertically, or even overhead, this is not possible using a MIG welder and makes the TIG welder an attractive solution for onsite welding in hard-to-reach places. TIG welding gives a very clean finish to the weld, which reduces the time needed afterward to clean the weld, this can be cost-saving, and certainly reduces the overall time taken for a project. TIG welding gives you one of the best quality welds, being extremely strong and offering better corrosion resistance than other welds.

When should we choose TIG welding?
TIG welding is often used for pipeline and pipe welding. It is a popular welding choice in the aviation and aerospace industries. Sheet metal industries use it for its ability to be used on thin metals, as well as join different metals together. TIG welding is often chosen when the weld needs to be exceedingly accurate, it is a good choice for areas where the weld will be visible and required to be aesthetically pleasing as it is possible to achieve an incredibly neat finish using a TIG welder.
